STATUES
For this topic I will be focusing on transforming people into statues and adding textures to get a realistic decaying look.

emotions
One of my ideas was to focus on the statues emotions. I imagine these pictures to be close ups of the statues face and only focusing on their expressions. Depending on the emotion, I will change about filters and camera angles and also the way I choose to make the statue look eg. makeup/props.
sadness
AIM - Sadness is a emotion I will try to convey within this topic. I will focus on the facial expressions of the statue and find creative ways to portray this emotion.
This is one of the pictures I like as it portrays sadness. I like how there is a water drop under the eye which makes it seem as if the statue is crying. The black and white filter also helps to convey the unhappiness which is something I could experiment with too. Furthermore,I like how the camera angle is at a slight high angle from the side, only focusing on one side of the statues face.
This is another picture that I like that portrays sadness. Unlike the previous photo, I like how the tear drops are a part of the statue and not added after. This would be hard to achieve but something I could also try. I also like how the camera angle is taken from a low angle and how the statues whole face isn't showing, only the eyes and nose.
I like this photo because it's different to the other ones. This statue is made by copper and you can see it decaying as some parts of the statue is going dark or washed out. I like how the decay is right under the eyes which suggests they are meant to be like tears.
DISTRESSED
AIM - Another emotion I will try to convey is distress. This is different to the sadness as the facial expressions would be a lot more dramatic as distress means 'extreme anxiety, sorrow or pain'. To show the difference, I will change the makeup as well as the overlays on Photoshop.
The second definition of distress shown above is about the 'marks of age and wear'. I found some images on Google of distressed patterns and I found it to be similar to the overlays I would add on top of the statues. Therefore for this emotion, I should focus on the different patterns and overlays to portray the decay and distress.

anger
AIM - Anger is another emotion I will try to portray. I will use different camera angles and overlays which convey the anger the best.
primary photos: inspiration
Before I went and did my photoshoots for this unit, I wanted to go out and take some photos of statues for some inspiration. I went out to Westminister and the V&A museum and found many statues.
This small photoshoot made me understand more about the types of poses the model will need to do and different colours I can explore with in order to achieve a 'statue' look. |
PRIMARY PHOTOS: TEXTURES
These are some photos of textures from my previous unit which I plan to use to overlay on top of my portrait shoots to create the decaying textures.
PHOTOSHOOT ONE
This is the first portrait photoshoot I did and I am overall pleased with the photos as I was able to get photos of different facial expressions. My aim for this photoshoot was to take photos with the models face covered in white clay mask which dried up to create a statue-like cracking effect.
PHOTOSHOOT TWO
This photoshoot was just for my experimentation. I wanted to take portrait shots without any white clay mask to see whether I can edit in a statue-like texture on Photoshop. I didn't consider poses or facial expressions as I was just focusing on the textures for experimentation.
PHOTO SHOOT THREE
I did this photoshoot outdoors and indoors to see the different types of photos I get at the end. I realised that outdoors the model looks more like a stone statue because of the dark lighting. I put the clay mask on the model and added a few patterns with paint to create a decayed look. I wanted to experiment with adding patterns on the model instead of overlaying textures.
PHOTO SHOOT FIVE
This is a photoshoot I did for the distressed theme. However, I don't like the outcome of these photos because I feel that the lighting isn't right. Also, I'm not very fond of the camera angles either as I feel that they're too close to the models face.
PHOTO SHOOT six
These are some photos from this photoshoot where my aim was to take pictures of new textures. This time I went to a cemetery as I was able to find more textures that I can use to overlay on the statues. I was able to find new types of textures. I wanted to take more pictures of textures as I was only using one photo for overlaying from my previous units.
experimentation
1. First I adjusted the levels
2. I desaturated the image to get rid of the skin colour 3. I fixed the brightness and contrast to make the model look more realistic 4. I used the clone tool to remove the eyebrows and eyelashes. 5. I added a mossy texture photo from my previous units to create a decayed look. |
For this experimentation, I wanted to see whether I can overlay textures to make the model look like a statue. However, I do not like the outcome of these photos because in my opinion the model doesn't look like a statue. I prefer applying a white face mask on the model before taking photos as I feel that it looks more realistic and the texture on the models face looks better as well.
